LIVING FOR DESIGN

Honoree:  Friends of Arts & Design (FAD)

I've always loved the title of Noel Coward's play, "Design For Living," and I thought the reverse of it, "Living For Design” would be a perfect match for a Cause Célèbre program we are presenting on May 11th.  The honoree is FRIENDS OF ART AND DESIGN (FAD) which provides the High School of Art & Design and its students with goods and services not covered by the Department of Education budget.

The title, "Living For Design," seems to be the right fit for a number of reasons.  One of the most important is that it speaks to a question that many young people begin to ask as they mature--what is it that we live for?  The other meaning of "living," as in how one makes a living, is another great concern that faces young people as they move through the different phases of their lives.

Living For Design will be held at The Players

(16 Gramercy Park South). 6:00-7:00 pm is a reception.  7:00--8:30 pm is the show.

Call 646-366-9340 for reservations.  Seating is limited.

“Of Fathers and Sons” by Mel Brooks, directed by Bob Dishy

Starring: Bob Dishy, Judy Graubart and Adam Green

Another hilarious one-act about a married couple who are petty thieves by profession.  Their great disappointment is that their son is a straight-A student who is studying to be a violinist. If only he could turn to crime!

"The Designers" written and directed by Susan Charlotte

Starring: Joan Copeland and Marian Seldes

A new one-act about two successful designers, one is a fashion designer, the other is an interior designer. The former designs clothes for large women, making them appear smaller than they are.  The latter is well known for making small spaces appear larger than they are.  Both women are dealing with aging and the fact that their larger than life worlds have become increasingly smaller.

The Dining Room (Excerpts) by A.R. Gurney, directed by Christopher Hart and Antony Marsellis

Starring: Reed Birney, Adam Green, Carolyn McCormick, Pippa Pearthree and Marian Seldes

One vignette will be presented from the highly successful play in which a very Waspy aunt is being interviewed by her nephew for a term paper.  She is extremely proud of her heritage and is thrilled to share it with her nephew, only to discover that he does not share her pride!
